The introduction of Microsoft Vista is likely to give a boost to the PC-TV tuner market.Microsoft has been encouraging PC-TV tuner vendors to centralize their  drivers through the windows update programme.

InSat anticipates that by 2011, 50.8 million PC TV tuners will be sold worldwide.It will  represent over $3 billion in revenue world wide in 2011.

A tiny wireless data chip developed by Hewlett Packard (HP) could be stuck on or embedded in almost any object and make available information and content now found mostly on electronic devices or the Internet.

The chip developed by the Memory Spot research team at HP Labs is a memory device based on CMOS design and about the size of a grain of rice or smaller.It incorporates a built in antenna and is completely self contained no need for battery and external electronics .The chip can transfer data at a rate of 10Mbps.Some applications include storing medical records on a patients wrist band,providing audio visual supplements,security,identity etc.

Using research results from the Humanoid Research group of the intelligent systems research institute of AIST ,two AIST approved start up companies i.e.,General Robotix and Moving Eye working together with Pirkus Robotix and Dai Nippon Technical research Institute have developed a humanoid robot called HRP 2m Choromet,which is driven by a controller that is driven in real time by Linux.

Intel has launched the first dual core version of the Itanium processor,the ‘Montecito’ models introduced ,the top end 9050 has 1.7 billion transistors and 24 MB of high speed cache memory.The models range in clock speed from 1.4 Ghz to 1.6 Ghz and price from $696 to $3692.

The new Itanium competes with Sun’s Sparc and IBM’s Power in big iron high end servers.

Browsing the BBC website again revealed an interesting news that that US scientists have designed a bionic eye to allow blind people to see again.

The BBC’s report says that the bionic eye comprises a computer chip that sits in the back of the individuals eye,linked up to a mini video camera built  into the the glasses they wear.The images captures by the camera are beamed to the chip which translates them into impulses that the brain can interpret.Human trials are said to be started within a year.It is expected that the technique would provide enough optical stimulation to allow patients to recognize faces.
