Nanotube- The first step towards quantum wires.
Electrical resistance arises because charge carriers-electrons and holes- collide with imperfections in the material they are traveling through. Theoretically, then, a perfectly crystalline conductor should offer no resistance. Yet for over a decade experiments have shown virtually defect free wires have resistance of several kilo ohms. A nanotube is clear plastic tube that holds a thin dark grey fiber and about 15 cm length of the fiber consists of billions of carbon nanotubes.
