Many of us have had to endure long winter months, cooped up indoors and in a state of hibernation. Our kids permanently planted in front of computers developing their already-advanced hand-eye coordination. Ah there is relief in sight…Spring has sprung and we’re reminded of all the childrens toys that will encourage our kids to come out of hiding.

When you think of outdoor toys that are still popular amongst our youth, do these come to mind?

1. Skipping Rope

- Although the jump rope has slightly evolved in what it’s made of and the choice of colours available, it still remains a tried and true toy that can be enjoyed on its own or with others (e.g. Double Dutch). It not only encourages creativity through improvising known tricks, children can express themselves through jump-rope rhymes.

2. Frisbee

- The plastic version that we all know has developed more recently into sports such as Ultimate Frisbee and Frisbee Golf. Easily portable, like the jump rope, it’s also become a favourite object of chase for some breeds of dogs.

3. Kite

- There’s something magical about witnessing a kite taking off from the ground for the first time, pulling us along for the ride and subject to the whim of the wind.

While Dora the Explorer and Bob the Builder are names that our youngsters know all too well, it’s nice to know that outdoor toys that we played with as kids are still around and will be enjoyed for generations to come.
